The Standard We Hold Poker Sites To
There’s no shortage of online poker sites competing for American players’ attention. What’s harder to find is a clear-eyed account of which ones actually hold up under scrutiny. Our rating process was built to answer that question in a way that’s consistent, honest, and grounded in how real players experience these platforms.
Every site we evaluate goes through the same structured review. No shortcuts, no preferential treatment. The criteria below are the framework our analysts use across every assessment.
Our Evaluation Criteria
Game Types and Traffic
A poker site’s value starts with what’s actually on offer and how many people are playing. We look at the variety of game types available, including Texas Hold’em, Omaha, mixed games, and any specialty formats, alongside the quality of the player pool at different stakes. Traffic matters enormously. A site with dozens of game options but empty tables during peak hours is far less useful than one with a leaner selection and consistent action. We assess both peak and off-peak availability.
Tournament Schedule
For many American players, tournament play is the main draw. We evaluate the depth and regularity of a site’s tournament calendar: daily guarantees, weekly majors, satellite structures, and special event series. We pay attention to buy-in ranges across the schedule, since a good tournament lobby serves players at multiple bankroll levels rather than focusing only on the high end.
Software Quality
The client you play on shapes every session. We test software for stability, ease of navigation, multi-table functionality, and mobile performance. Lag, crashes, and a confusing interface are not minor inconveniences; they affect decision-making and directly impact the player experience. We look at both desktop and mobile clients and factor in available features like hand history tools, note-taking, and customization options.
Rakeback and Promotions
Rake is unavoidable in online poker, which makes how a site gives value back to its players particularly important. We analyze rakeback structures, loyalty programs, deposit bonuses, and ongoing promotions with an eye for actual value rather than headline numbers. A 100% deposit bonus buried in impossible clearing requirements is worth very little. We read the terms, run the math, and report what players can realistically expect to receive.
Banking Options
The US market presents unique banking challenges, and we take them seriously. We evaluate the range of deposit and withdrawal methods available to American players, processing times, fees, and minimum or maximum transaction limits. The ability to get money onto and off a site reliably is a fundamental requirement. Sites that make this unnecessarily complicated or inconsistent receive lower marks regardless of their other qualities.
Security
Trust is everything in online poker. We look at licensing and jurisdictional oversight, RNG certification, data encryption standards, and a site’s track record for handling player funds responsibly. We also consider how long a platform has been operating and whether its ownership has a history of honoring commitments to players. Sites with unresolved payment complaints or regulatory issues do not receive favorable ratings.
How the Process Works
Our analysts approach each review with the same framework, working through the criteria above in a repeatable, structured way. Where possible, we use the platforms directly rather than relying solely on publicly available information. Ratings are revisited when sites make significant changes, and we flag when a review reflects recently updated information.
On Integrity and Affiliate Relationships
We earn revenue through affiliate partnerships with some of the platforms we review. Our editorial team works to ensure that commercial arrangements do not determine ratings. Sites are assessed on what they offer players, not on the size of any associated revenue agreement. We hold ourselves accountable to that standard, and we update ratings when the evidence warrants it, in either direction.
If a site underdelivers, that will be reflected in our coverage. American players deserve honest guidance, and that’s what we aim to provide.
